Deputy Director of IMDEA Energy

 

Manuel Romero Álvarez is PhD in Chemical Engineering by the University of Valladolid Spain in 1990. Deputy Director of the Instituto Madrileño de Estudios Avanzados en Energía (IMDEA Energía) since june 2007 and Principal Researcher of the Solar Energy R&D Unit. He was Director of the Renewable Energy Division of CIEMAT since June 2004 till August 2008. CIEMAT is the Spain’s National Laboratory for Energy Research. Director of the Plataforma Solar de Almería from 2002 till 2004, the largest R&D facilities for testing and development of solar concentrating technologies. Project manager at CIEMAT since 1985 till 2008 with responsibilites on R&D for solar thermal power plants, solar hydrogen and solar detoxification. Participation in more than 45 R&D projects in energy research, 15 of them financed by the European Commission. Member of the experts’ committee of the Energy R&D Program of the VI and VII Framework Program of the EC till August 2008. Co-author of the European Technology Roadmap on High Temperature Hydrogen Production Processes INNOHYP, contracted by the EC in 2005, and co-author of the European Technology Roadmap for Solar Thermal Power Plants, ECOSTAR, contracted by the European Commission in 2004. During his period at CIEMAT he was ExCo Member of the Solar Heating and Cooling Implementing Agreement of the IEA; ExCo Member of the Solar Power and Chemical Energy Systems (SolarPACES) Implementing Agreement of the IEA; Operating Agent for Task I (Solar Thermal Power Plants) at the SolarPACES Implementing Agreement of the IEA; ExCo Member and member of the board at the EUREC Agency (European Renewable Energy Centres Agency); ExCo Member at the Alliance of European Laboratories on Concentrating Solar Power (SolLab), formed by CIEMAT (Spain), CNRS (France), DLR (Germany), ETH (Switzerland) and PSI (Switzerland); Member of the board of experts for the Audit of the Scientific Activities of the Solar Chemistry Laboratory. Switzerland; Member of the board of experts for the Audit of the scientific activities of the Solar Energy Unit UPR 8251 of CNRS (France ) in Perpignan and Font Romeu, including the solar laboratory PROMES and the solar furnace at Oedillo. 2-3 december 2004; Member of the board of experts for the Audit of the scientific activities of the Centro de Investigación en Energía (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). 31 January-2 February 2007. Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Solar Energy Engineering since January 2007 and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Solar Energy (Elsevier) since January 2002 till January 2007. Member of scientific committee and reviewer in 10 specialized international conferences on solar thermal technologies. Chairman, editor of proceedings and member of scientific committee and reviewer of manuscripts at the 13th International Symposium on Concentrated Solar Power and Chemical Energy Technologies, Seville, Spain, June 20-24, 2006. Editor of 6 books related to solar concentrating technologies. Author of 3 chapters in handbooks of solar energy, 24 papers in scientific journals with SCI, and 80 publications in books of proceedings with ISBN. He is co-author of three patents on solar gasification of carbonaceous materials (two in US and 1 European), and 1 in solar concentrating systems (European).
