Conference: The design, construction and research possibilities of the University of Sheffield’s 2MW/1MWh grid connected LTO battery

The UoS is operating one of the world’s largest LTO batteries.  Although rated at 2MW/1WMh and comprises 21,0120 20AH Toshiba SCiB cells.  Although it is small by commercial standards it is an interesting research facility allowing the behaviour of cells to be understood while operating under commercial conditions.  One interesting market is the UK’s Enhanced Frequency Response.  This is the control of frequency (50Hz) at the sub second level and entails the battery running a maximum power, both output and input from the grid.  There are questions as to what effects this has on the state of health of the batteries and how to monitor this.
