Conference: Application of non-conventional computational intelligence methodologies to highly distributed electricity networks: Balearic Islands Case Study

Vicente Canals obtained the inter university Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering (Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the University of Balearic Islands) at the University of Balearic Islands in 2012 under the supervision of Dr. Josep Lluis Rossello Sanz (Electronics Engineering Group). Dr. Canals from September 2016 holds a position of lecturer in the area of Mechanical Engineering (at the Energy Engineering Group of Dr. Victor Martinez Moll) of the University of the Balearic Islands. He developed his professional and research life between the areas of Electronics Technology and Mechanical Engineering, attached to the Department of Physics of this same university. He presents a strong profile of knowledge transfer from the University to the Company (three national patents, and one of them transferred to a biotechnology company), being also a great connoisseur of the national energy and industrial sector. He has participated in several R&D agreements with corporation as "Sampol Ingeniería y Obras, SA", in addition to his own entrepreneurial experiences with the “Laboratorio de Metrologia y Acusticas de las Islas Baleares S.L.” between 2007-2012 and the technological start-up in the field of industrial engineering (facilities) and the application of computational intelligence in the field of energy systems "Proigneo Consulting", incubated by Foundation Bit of the Balearic Islands Government, 2014-2016.

While Dr. Canals' scientific career in the early stages has focused on the field of test and thermal modeling of CMOS devices and the development of robotic system for people with motor disabilities. Later, Dr. Canals focused on the implementation of alternative and massive new computational methodologies (Stochastic Computing) in hardware (CMOS and FPGA's) applied in the field of computational intelligence systems, as neural networks and statistical pattern recognition.

Nowadays, Dr. Canals is starting a new line of research based on the application of the different concepts of computational intelligence in the field of energy markets and generation forecast of plants and energy systems, mainly with renewable sources.

As a result of her scientific career, he is author of 16 publications at the highest level. Most of her publications belong to the top-ten electric and electronics engineering journals like IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, International Journal of Neural Systems. In turn, he has participated in 33 communications at international conferences, and in 3 national patents.
