SolH2: Production of hydrogen via solar driven high temperature process

Research Project with reference: IPT-2011-1323-920000, coordinated by the company Abengoa Hidrógeno, S.A., corresponding to the call 2011, for the Sub-program INNPACTO within the Instrumental line of Articulation and Internationalization System, under the National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Innovation 2008-2011, funded by Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and co-funded by FEDER funds.

The objective of this project is the integration of solar thermal high temperature with hydrogen as an energy carrier, so as to provide an alternative to energy storage in a solar plant. To meet this goal, we designed, built and validated two hydrogen production systems integrated with high-temperature solar energy:

  • Hydrogen production from bioethanol reforming with steam, integrated in parabolic dish (located in the Planta Solar de Sanlúcar La Mayor).
  • Production of hydrogen from ferrites thermochemical cycle, integrated in solar tower (SSPS-CRS installation located at the Plataforma Solar de Almería).
