IMDEA Energy participates in the European Researchers' Night. In this edition, the institute moves into the classroom through different virtual workshops. Through experiments and interactive games, children will learn how the efficient use of energy resources is key in the transition process towards a clean and circular economy model, in line with the Green Deal and the 2030 Agenda.
Researchers from the center have the mission to bring science closer to schools in the activity "Clean Energy for a Sustainable World" to be held on the morning of September 24, in the context of the 12th edition of the Researchers' Night 2021 in Madrid. The activity will consist of different workshops of approximately one-hour’s duration, aimed at different courses between 3rd and 5th grade of primary school.
In the workshop "Conductors and concentration of light", the properties of different materials to conduct electricity will be studied by assembling an electrical circuit. In addition, a homemade concentrator will be built to show the usefulness of light concentration. This workshop is aimed at 3rd grade students, who will be able to distinguish between conductive and insulating materials and observe the effect of heat on some materials.
On the other hand, in the workshop "Magic seems, yeasts and pores are", a fermentation process will be carried out to produce energy and porous materials will be used for water decontamination. The workshop is recommended for 4th grade students, who will learn about the use of yeasts and porous materials in the development of cleaner, energetically viable and environmentally friendly technologies.
The generation, transport, distribution and storage of the energy we consume every day is a very important issue. The workshop "Challenges in the energy cycle" will show with an interactive game the different energy sources, the challenges in its transportation and the need to establish energy storage strategies to ensure its supply. The workshop will be very useful for 5th grade students, who will be able to broaden their knowledge of renewable energies and electricity.
Finally, the "Sustainable Energy" workshop, consists of a game on energy sustainability. Topics related to sustainable mobility (electric and hydrogen vehicles), renewable energies and energy saving will be discussed. In addition, the eruption of a volcano will be simulated to explain what geothermal energy is and how we can use it in our daily lives. The workshop is recommended for 5th grade students, who will learn about different energy sources, renewable and non-renewable, energy use and energy saving habits.
The aim of this activity is to awaken the interest and curiosity of the youngest in science and show them that, besides being essential to move towards a better planet, it can be interesting and funny.
