During the period 2000-2009, his main research area was focused on the study and development of high temperature processes for energy and environmental issues, mainly based on thermal plasmas and electric arc discharges. Main studied applications concerned gas phase synthesis of carbon nanostructured materials (fullerenes, nanotubes and carbon blacks and doped-TiO2 nanoparticles), on-board hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and biomass gasification. From 2009, his research interests concern concentrating solar energy systems and technologies, with special emphasis on high flux optical engineering, modelling and characterization; innovative heat transfer fluids for solar thermal power plants; high-temperature latent and thermochemical heat storage; production of solar fuels and chemicals by solar thermochemistry and high-temperature heat exchangers mainly focused on innovative solar receivers’ development.
He has co-directed 4 doctoral theses as well as numerous master theses and usually contributes in various master courses on thermal heat transfer and renewable energy. He has collaborated in 27 national and international (7) research projects. Author or co-author of 57 papers in peer review journals, 2 chapters in handbooks on renewable energy, 110 communications in national and international conferences and two international and three national patents (1 French and 2 Spanish). Theme Chair in the ISES Solar World Congresses 2013 in Cancún (México) and 2015 in Daegu (South Korea). Guest Editor of Solar Energy Journal for the Special Issue SWC2013 (Solar Energy, Volume 121, Pages 1-180, November 2015) and Associated Editor of Solar Energy Journal from 2015. Member of the scientific committee in the SolarPACES 2014 and 2015 and Hypothesis 2015. Member of the International Solar Energy Society ISES (2012 - present), American Society of Mechanical Engineering ASME (2010 - present), and Spanish Royal Society of Physics RSEF (2014 - present). Secretary of the Spanish Association on Solar Energy AEDES (2012 - present). Dr. Gonzalez-Aguilar has contributed as paper reviewer for the following Journals: Applied Thermal Engineering, Energy Conversion and Management, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, Renewable Energy, Solar Energy, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, Journal of Physics D... and serves as expert evaluator in Spanish R&D calls, US ARPAe program, and Swiss PSI fellow program.
