It corresponds to the Activity 2 within the Industrial R&D Initiative CENIT “Consolida: Consortium for Solar R&D" coordinated by the companie Abengoa Solar NT and granted at the fourth call of CENIT Programme of the Ministry of Science and Education.
Several independent studies and the International Energy Agency confirm Concentrating Solar Thermal Power Systems as the most economic way of producing bulk electricity from solar energy. Their projections estimate, however, that levelized electricity cost is still 2.5-3.5 times more expensive than conventional fossil thermal power plants. In any case, all the studies predict a significant potential of costs reduction and the objective is to reach LEC figures below 8 c€/kWh in less than 15 years. The uncertainty associated to the lack of experience and commercial deployment of several technologies makes necessary to undertake a comparative analysis based upon technology watch and the corresponding feasibility studies in order to determine the objectives and contents of R&D. The main tasks of the project are:
- Review of technology options and state of the art in terms of maturity and risks.
- Identify the critical points and the necessary technology development, sensitivity and impact to achieve a higher degree of competitiveness and the capacity of penetration of that technologies in future markets.
